18 years after Steve Irwin’s death, his son, Robert, got to see his likeness for the first time not in a picture or video.
In a video shared to TikTok by news.com.au, Robert Irwin, 21, comes face to face with a wax figure of his late dad, wildlife conservationist Steve Irwin. Robert was visiting Madame Tussaud’s wax museum in Sydney, Australia, to view his own newly unveiled wax figure on Thursday (November 28), making him the youngest Australian to be immortalized in wax.

While there, Irwin saw his dad’s statue, which was placed at the museum in 2015, nine years after the elder Irwin was killed by a stingray while filming an underwater documentary at the Great Barrier Reef.
Robert, who was only 2 when his dad died, became clearly emotional as he gazed upon the likeness of his dad.
“That is amazing. It’s the first time in a long time that he’s not just a picture,” Robert said as he choked up before shaking his head and walking away.
In an interview with Sunrise, Robert Irwin further explained his emotional reaction to seeing his dad.
“It was the first time I’d ever gotten to see my dad’s wax figure. I’d seen pictures of it, but I’d never seen it in real life,” he told the outlet. “I was overcome with emotion. And I didn’t think that was going to happen, but I was actually quite emotional seeing it.”
He added, “Dad, for the last 17 years of my life, has been pictures and video, and to actually see him kind of just standing there, it was a lot. It was actually a lot to take in.”
Robert then viewed his own wax figure, which will be displayed in the same room as his dad’s.
Robert Irwin has followed in his father’s footsteps as a wildlife ambassador, television personality, and zoo keeper.
The younger Irwin has taken over many of the responsibilities and hobbies his dad had at the Australia Zoo that is owned by their family. He is often seen wrestling crocodiles, a skill that earned his Steve the nickname “The Crocodile Hunter,” handling snakes, and taking care of other wildlife species that call the zoo home.

Robert Irwin made his first public appearance at just a few weeks old. A video captured the moment that his dad held him on his hip while feeding a chicken carcass to a crocodile in front of a crowd at the zoo.
Robert has been in the spotlight ever since and has become the family’s unofficial spokesperson and face of the Irwin family brand.
