Easter Tradition Continues On South Lawn Of White House

Following a week of Easter services held at the White House, the annual White House Easter Egg Roll is the culmination of the Executive House’s observance of Christ’s resurrection.

The last time President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump hosted the egg roll, it was 2019. In 2020, the final full year of Trump’s term as 45th president, the COVID-19 pandemic had just begun.

It was not until President Joe Biden‘s second year as the 46th president, in 2022, that the traditional Easter egg roll resumed.

Going back to 1878, during the presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes, the White House’s Easter festivities have been built upon by the administrations which followed. In several cases, the First Lady has had a role in further defining this Easter Monday event.

According to the White House website, First Lady Lou Hoover had “part of the South Lawn roped off for folk dancing.” A few decades later, First Lady Pat Nixon introduced the egg roll races.

In 1981, First Lady Nancy Reagan had the first wooden Easter egg made as a keepsake for attendees of the White House’s festivities.

The Trumps Host 2025 Easter Egg Roll

Following a week of Easter observances at the White House, in keeping with Tump’s renewed promise in a presidential message to “defend the Christian faith,” the egg roll was held on Monday, April 21.

With events on the South Lawn sponsored by a variety of corporations, such as Amazon, Meta, and YouTube, it was still the eggs which were the highlight of the event.

30,000 real eggs were donated by American farmers for both the Easter egg hunt and the Easter egg roll.

Before the egg roll began, Trump drew everyone’s attention to an executive order he made in recognition of the death of Pope Francis earlier in the day. This executive order calls for flags to be at half staff.

He then welcomed the estimated 42,000 people who were expected to visit the South Lawn throughout the day, saying, “We going to have a lot of fun!”

Thanking Melania for her work preparing the egg roll, Trump said, “She worked very hard on it.”

To applause, Trump said that the reason for the day’s events was “honoring Jesus Christ,” adding, “We’re going to honor Jesus Christ, very powerfully, throughout our lives. All throughout our lives, not just now. We’re bringing religion back in America.”

After finishing his remarks from the balcony overlooking the South Lawn, the First Couple descended the stairs and joined attendees on the lawn. Blowing whistles, they kicked off the first Easter egg race of the day.

Other Easter Observances At The White House

The White House Faith Office arranged for an Easter Prayer Service and dinner to be held on April 16.

The next day, April 17, students from Liberty University’s School of Music hosted an Easter worship service for the White House staff and cabinet members.

However, it was Trump’s April 13 presidential message, issued on Palm Sunday, which garnered the most attention.

A variation of this message was shared by Trump on Truth Social, writing:

“This Holy Week, Christians around the World remember the Crucifixion of God’s Only Begotten Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and, on Easter Sunday, we celebrate His Glorious Resurrection and proclaim, as Christians have done for nearly 2,000 years, ‘HE IS RISEN!’”

One week later, on April 20, Easter Sunday, Trump sent out a more divisive message on Truth Social.

“Happy Easter to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics who are fighting and scheming so hard to bring Murderers, Drug Lords, Dangerous Prisoners, the Mentally Insane, and well known MS-13 Gang Members and Wife Beaters, back into our Country,” Trump wrote. “Happy Easter also to the WEAK and INEFFECTIVE Judges and Law Enforcement Officials who are allowing this sinister attack on our Nation to continue, an attack so violent that it will never be forgotten!”

He also criticized his predecessor, describing Biden as “incompetent” and alleging an autopen had been used to sign executive orders on Biden’s behalf.

This Truth Social post was made by President Donald Trump at 8:46 a.m. on Easter Sunday, April 20.
