Toby Keith Steps Back From Public Life After Stomach Cancer Diagnosis

Toby Keith received a stomach cancer diagnosis in the fall of 2021. He kept his diagnosis private before he eventually shared the news with his fans on June 12, 2022:

“Last fall I was diagnosed with stomach cancer. I’ve spent the last 6 months receiving chemo, radiation, and surgery. So far, so good. I need time to breathe, recover and relax. I am looking forward to spending this time with family. But I will see the fans sooner than later. I can’t wait,” Keith said in a statement on social media.

Now, just a year after revealing his diagnosis, Keith has an update on his cancer battle. Thankfully, the update is a positive one.

Toby’s Tumor Shrunk & He’s Feeling Better, But Still Undergoing Treatments

Keith told The Oklahoman he’s “feeling pretty good” at the moment. “Basically, everything is in a real positive trend,” he said.

However, Keith’s cancer is not gone yet, and he continues to undergo chemotherapy. He also receives immunotherapy treatments and sees a nutritionist.

Keith’s tumor shrunk by a third and his blood work looks good. He said, “I’m about another eight weeks from my last scan. So I expect next time I look for that tumor to be even less — and I’ve only got one that’s shown up.”

Toby Keith Hopes To Be Back On The Road Before This Year Ends

Since he’s feeling better, Keith hopes he can get back to performing before the end of the year. He said:

I’ve got more wind. And I’m thinking about bringing the band in and setting up, playing two or three days somewhere just to see if I can get through two hours.”

If that works out, Keith says he’ll head “out on the road this fall.” He added, “I’m ready. That’s living.”

We hope to see Keith back onstage soon! Enjoy one of his past live performances of “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” in the video below.
