Kevin Costner Left Yellowstone After Season 5’s Mid-Season Finale
Luke Grimes, who played Kevin Costner’s son on Yellowstone, says he hasn’t talked to the Horizon star since he left the show.
During an interview on SiriusXM’s The Michael Smerconish Program, Costner explained why he ended up leaving Yellowstone. He said scheduling conflicts and failed contract neogtations led to his depature.
Costner wanted time to work on his multi-part Horizon movie saga. While things seemed like they would work out at first, negotations eventually fell apart.
“There were the gaps that were there,” Costner said. “There was contractual things that would allow for both things to be done, but because both things were contractual, you had to make room for the other thing. There was room, but it was difficult for them to keep their schedule.”
However Costner clairified that he “didn’t quit” Yellowstone.

Luke Grimes, who played Kayce Dutton, previously said it was “a mircle” Yellowstone was able to resume without Costner.
“...it felt like it was just another challenge – but we were able to do it,” Grimes said. “It’s a miracle that the show was able to stay the course through all of that. [Kevin Costner] leaving was just another hump to get over. I think Taylor wrote it beautifully, and we executed it.“
Although Grimes played Costner’s son on Yellowstone, the two actors haven’t talked in some time. Grimes recently told Men’s Health that he hasn’t talked to Costner since he left the show.
However, Grimes wanted fans to know he feels no ill will toward Costner.
“It’s not a case of any hard feelings or anything; it’s just, he’s Kevin Costner,” Grimes said. “He’s a big deal. I do have his phone number—I just don’t feel like it’s my place to reach out. He can reach out to me if he wants to.”
Grimes said none of the other cast members saw Costner’s depature “coming the way it did.” But he recognized how those sorts of things happen sometimes.
“But just like in life, man, these things happen, they happen fast, and they’re not predictable. I lost my father a few years ago. It happened fast, and it was not the way that you would think that that would happen. In life, these things happen and then people have to start making decisions. And in our little Yellowstone world, that helped ramp the show up into a boil,” Grimes said.
Grimes and Costner were always dynamic whenver they appeared together onscreen. Fans will surely miss watching them star alongside each other.
