Spoilers Ahead For The Yellowstone Finale
Beth and Jamie’s fight scene in the Yellowstone finale was given a code name to keep the details under wraps. Considering the nature of the scene, its code name was surprisingly funny.
After much anticipation, the Yellowstone finale aired on Sunday (December 15). The drama reached an all-time high when Beth and Jamie Dutton clashed in a brutal fight that ended in Jamie’s death.
Years of built-up hatred and resentment led to the deadly fight between the two siblings. However, the true catalyst for the confrontation was the death of the Dutton family patriarch, John, earlier in the second half of Season 5.
While Jamie did not kill John himself, he was indirectly involved in his demise. Because of this, Beth blamed Jamie for their father’s death and vowed to avenge him.
Beth And Jamie’s Yellowstone Finale Fight Scene Was Given A Code Name
Details about Yellowstone‘s final scripts were kept tightly under wraps. Christina Voros, who directed four episodes in Season 5, Part 2, told The Hollywood Reporter that even the cast and crew were on a need-to-know basis.
“The cast that was involved in the most secretive elements of the season got the full scripts, but that was a very small portion of the creative folks involved,” Voros said. “We talked about this at the very beginning with script redactions. The costume designer didn’t get dialogue. The production designer had to read the scripts, but her art director didn’t necessarily see them. So people just knew exactly what they needed to know to make a scene happen, but the monologue was completely redacted.”
The Yellowstone team also assigned code names to key scenes to keep their true nature a secret. For example, John Dutton’s death was described as “Crosby’s arrival” in the script.
Beth and Jamie’s fight scene also received a code name, and it was surprisingly funny.
“Weirdly, Jamie Dutton’s death became ‘Beth and Jamie play Scrabble,'” Voros said. “I think it had to with putting pieces together, that might have been the origin of it.”
Voros explained how by then, some people may have realized the word “arrival” was used as a code for a character’s death. It was used to describe the deaths of John Dutton, Sarah Atwood, and Colby.
So, the Yellowstone team decided to give Beth and Jamie’s fight scene a different code name.
“We wanted to add a layer of confusion around it because so many people had ‘arrived’ at that point. We didn’t want people to put it together, so that final fight sequence was, ‘Beth and Jamie play Scrabble,'” Voros said.
Now, it’s been confirmed that a Yellowstone spin-off about Beth Dutton and her husband, Rip Wheeler, has been given the green light. Time will tell if Jamie’s presence will continue to loom over his sister, even in death.
