Clint Black gave a hilarious acceptance speech after receiving the ACM Poet’s Award during Monday’s ACM Honors.

While receiving the ACM Poet’s Award during the 2023 ACM Honors that aired Monday (Sept. 18), Clint Black drew belly laughs as he gave an incredibly funny speech to honor the accomplishment.

According to the ACM website, the ACM Poet’s Award is an “award presented to a country music songwriter for outstanding and longstanding musical and/or lyrical contributions throughout their career, with special consideration given to a song or songs’ impact on the culture of country music.”

The heartwarming footage of Black accepting the award showed him taking the stage to deliver a speech that showed his quick wit and sense of humor.

“I’d like to say that I am very humbled to be given this award, but it wouldn’t be truthful. I’m going to think much, much more of myself now after this,” he joked before adding that Francis Scott Key, who wrote the National Anthem, never got this poet’s award. He added that neither did the great poet Edgar Allan Poe, which of course, made the audience burst out with laughter.

“I just want to thank the ACM for putting them all in their places. And honoring me instead,” he joked. You know, great inspiration for song writing came along in 1991 in the form of my wife, Lisa. Ten years after our marriage, another little buddle of inspiration came along, our daughter Lily. And the well just kept getting deeper and deeper and deeper with all that love in my life.”

Black pointed out that the lyrics in country music songs are key to why they are so great. Like other genres of music, the chords, rhythm, and sound of the instruments are wonderful, but what makes a long-lasting connection to country music songs are the lyrics and storytelling.

He ended his speech by thanking the audience for their support and teased them that they should stay tuned for some new, upcoming songs that he’s looking forward to releasing.

The 16th Annual ACM Honors were held at the historic Ryman Auditorium on Wednesday, August 24th, and aired on Fox on Monday, September 18th.

During the show, other county music artists won awards, like the ACM Triple Crown Award won by Chris Stapleton who won ACM New Male Vocalist of the Year, ACM Male Vocalist of the Year, and ACM Entertainer of the Year throughout his career. Kane Brown was also honored with the ACM Internation Award for his “outstanding contributions to the growth of country music throughout the world.”

The ACM explains their mission on their website“In the half century since its inception, the Academy of Country Music has grown from a regional Southern California trade organization to a national powerhouse with its sights set on a higher purpose – improving lives by connecting fans, artists and the industry. Today, the ACM is dedicated more than ever to promoting new artists, artists on the rise and established superstars, while supporting the good work of charitable causes nationwide through ACM Lifting Lives.”
