Dolly Parton Speaks About The One Song Carl Dean Told Her Not To Record

Dolly Parton, the queen of country, has always been known for her willingness to take risks when it comes to her music career. During a conversation with Dave Berry on Absolute Radio Breakfast while promoting her new album, Rockstar, set to release on November 17, and her memoir, Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones, Dolly opened up about the time she decided to cover Led Zeppelin’s legendary “Stairway to Heaven.”

Here’s What Her Husband Said About Her Singing “Stairway to Heaven.”

Now, you might expect that Dolly’s husband would be thrilled with the idea of her covering such an iconic song. After all, she has an incredible track record of turning classic songs into her own unique style. However, Carl Dean had a different perspective on this one. And what was additionally shocking was that Dolly shared that country music was actually his least favorite type of music to listen to.

“I did a version of ‘Stairway to Heaven’ some years back as a bluegrass kind of thing, and he didn’t think I should have done it,” Dolly confessed. “He said, are you sure that’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ or stairwell to hell?”

Dolly emphasized that her husband is always straight-forward with her, and he warned against taking on this rock and roll classic. He told her, “He said ‘I don’t think you should do that,’ and I said ‘why?’ and he said, ‘because it’s a legend. It’s a classic.'”

Despite the initial reservations from Carl Dean, Dolly went ahead with her rendition of “Stairway to Heaven” in 2002. Fortunately, it all turned out well, and her husband eventually came around to appreciate her version of the classic tune. Dolly revealed that he eventually said it was “okay” and commended her for staying true to the original song.

In the end, it seems that Dolly Parton’s musical instincts prevailed once again. Not only did her husband warm up to her rendition of “Stairway to Heaven,” but she also has more exciting surprises in store for her fans with her upcoming album, Rockstar. With collaborations with legendary artists like Paul McCartney and tracks like “We Are the Champions” and “We Will Rock You” from Queen, Dolly continues to bring her best and entertain us.

So, while Dolly’s husband may have had his doubts about “Stairway to Heaven,” it’s clear her fans can’t wait to hear what she has in store for them next.
