Actress Hayden Panettiere Dies At 36
Actress and singer Hayden Panettiere died on August 16, 2026 at just 36 years old. Her father, Skip, shared the devastating news in a statement to ABC News:
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” the statement read. “She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”
Best known for her her roles in Nashville, Remember the Titans, Bring It On, and Raising Helen, Hayden began acting as a very young girl. In recent years, she had been extremely vocal about her struggles that have gravely impacted her life.
For years, Hayden struggled with what she described as a “horrible cycle” of depression and anxiety while trying to keep up with the demands of her career and a busy filming schedule. She later turned to substance abuse as a way of coping, and said an abusive relationship only deepened her struggles, leaving her trapped in what she described as a destructive “hamster wheel.”

Hayden Panettiere Shared Why She Gave Up Custody Of Her Daughter, Kaya
In December 2014, Hayden welcomed her daughter, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, with her former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko. Although she had always dreamed of becoming a mother, Hayden later revealed that something felt “terribly wrong” after welcoming Kaya.
During a May 2026 interview with podcaster Jay Shetty, the actress said she never resented her newborn but found herself constantly struggling with overwhelming stress and anxiety, eventually turning to alcohol in an attempt to self-medicate.
When her daughter was around four months old, Hayden decided to seek professional help for her struggles with alcohol. She entered a rehabilitation facility during a break from filming Nashville, though she later said her postpartum depression was never properly addressed.

While seeking help for her addiction, Kaya went to live in Europe with Wladimir. She opened up to Jay about how the experience changed her.
“That was incredibly difficult. The fact that my child wasn’t going to be with me all day, every day was…you can’t put words to it,” Hayden told Jay. “It’s just a really intense feeling or multiple feelings really layered together.”
Eventually, she felt giving up custody of Kaya was what was best for her, as she had “an incredible life” overseas. She remained close with her daughter, visiting as much as her schedule allowed.
“I have an incredible relationship with her. I go travel as much as I can. I see her. I do spend a lot of time on FaceTime with her, but we talk about really deep things,” Hayden said. “We have a really intense, incredible bond and I’m very grateful for that.”
Our continued thoughts and prayers are with Hayden’s family and friends during this unimaginable time.
