“Watermelon Moonshine” By Lainey Wilson Holds #1 Spot On The Chart For Second Consecutive Week
Lainey Wilson is on a roll at the moment. Just a few weeks ago, she won three trophies at the first People’s Choice Country Awards.
Also, Wilson recently received nine nominations at the upcoming CMA Awards, more than any other artist in 2023. She is only the fourth artist in CMA history to earn nine or more nominations in a single year.
To sweeten the deal, Wilson earned a nod in the coveted Entertainer of the Year category. Her fellow nominees include Carrie Underwood, Chris Stapleton, Luke Combs, and Morgan Wallen.

How Lainey Made History With “Watermelon Moonshine” & Its Climb To #1
As Music Row reports, Wilson became the first solo female artist in two years to earn a #1 song on the Country Airplay chart. The last solo female artist to accomplish the same feat was Wilson herself.
Her breakout hit, “Things a Man Oughta Know,” reached #1 in September 2021.
Then, Wilson upped the ante when “Watermelon Moonshine” remained at the #1 spot on the Country Airplay chart for a second consecutive week. As CMT shared on Instagram, this made her the first solo female country artist to spend multiple weeks at #1 on the chart in two years.
The last artist who accomplished the same thing was Gabby Barrett. Her single “The Good Ones” spent three weeks at #1 in April 2021.

Wilson is one of only three female artists this decade (the 2020s) to have a solo song spend multiple weeks at #1 on the Country Airplay chart. The other two artists who achieved the same feat were Barrett with “The Good Ones” and Maren Morris with “The Bones.”

Lainey Wilson Responds To Success Of “Watermelon Moonshine”
In a statement provided to Music Row after “Watermelon Moonshine” first reached #1, Wilson said:
“I’m so honored that ‘Watermelon Moonshine’ hit No. 1 on country radio this week! This song was co-written with two incredible songwriters, Josh Kear and Jordan Schmidt, and I couldn’t be more proud listening to folks sing it back at shows. This track represents the storytelling I grew up with and reflects on that young love we all like to reminisce on.”
