“It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us,” Priscilla shared. “She was the most passionate strong and loving woman I have ever known. We ask for privacy as we try to deal with this profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers. At this time there will be no further comment.”

Two years after Ben passed away, Lisa Marie wrote an essay about her grief. She shared this essay with PEOPLE in recognition of “National Grief Awareness Day” on August 30, 2022.

In the essay, Lisa Marie shared what she learned about grief over the years:

One is that grief does not stop or go away in any sense, a year, or years after the loss…Two, grief is incredibly lonely…Three, and particularly if the loss was premature, unnatural, or tragic, you will become a pariah in a sense. You can feel stigmatized and perhaps judged in some way as to why the tragic loss took place. This becomes magnetized by a million if you are the parent of a child who passed. No matter how old they were. No matter the circumstances.”

Lisa Marie Dealt With Grief From An Early Age Following The Death Of Her Father, Elvis Presley

Lisa Marie detailed how she was not new to grief, since Elvis passed away in 1977:

I’ve dealt with death, grief and loss since the age of nine years old. I’ve had more than anyone’s fair share of it in my lifetime and somehow, I’ve made it this far. But this one, the death of my beautiful, beautiful son? The sweetest and most incredible being that I have ever had the privilege of knowing, who made me feel so honored every single day to be his mother? Who was so much like his grandfather on so many levels that he actually scared me? Which made me worry about him even more than I naturally would have? No. Just no … no no no no …”

She said it was “a real choice to keep going,” after Ben died, but she did so for the sake of her daughters.

In the caption, Lisa Marie said:

Hi. In honor of it being National Grief Awareness Day , I wrote an essay about Grief which was posted today on @people . I thought I’d post it here in the hopes that anyone who needs to hear all of this it helps in some way.”
