Morgan Wallen Scores Chart-Topping Hit With A Miranda Lambert Co-Write
In early 2023, Morgan Wallen earned his eighth #1 hit when “Thought You Should Know” claimed the top spot on both Billboard country charts. The song also crossed over to claim the seventh slot on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.
As of this writing, the official music video for “Thought You Should Know” has over 61 million views.
Wallen co-wrote “Thought You Should Know” with Nicolle Galyon and another famous country singer-songwriter…Miranda Lambert.
“It was one of those magic moments where everything just worked,” Lambert told American Songwriter about the experience of writing the song with Wallen. ” [He said,] ‘I want to write a song for my mom.’ I’m like, ‘I’m all about that and you picked the two right girls.'”
Although Lambert did not record “Thought You Should Know,” its climb to the top of the charts was still a huge achievement. It was the first time she ever earned a #1 hit as solely a songwriter, and not the artist.
Hear Miranda Sing “Thought You Should Know” For The First Time In Front Of An Audience
Still, fans were itching to hear Lambert sing “Thought You Should Know” herself. She finally granted their wish during her headlining performance at Gulf Coast Jam in Panama City Beach, Florida. It was her first time ever singing “Thought You Should Know” live in front of a crowd.
Lambert did change one of the lyrics to make the song fit her own life. In Wallen’s recording, he sings, “Yeah, I know you’ve been worrying ’bout me. You’ve been losing sleep since ’93,” in reference to his birth year. Lambert changed the lyrics to sing, “You’ve been losing sleep sing ’83,” since that’s the year she was born.
