One year after Toby Keith accepted the first-ever Icon Award at the inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards, Miranda Lambert will be awarded the same honor.

The People’s Choice Country Awards announced Thursday (August 22) that Miranda Lambert is the recipient of the 2024 Icon Award. Lambert will receive the award during the live awards show hosted by Shania Twain that will air September 26.

According to a press release, Lambert was chosen as this year’s honoree based on her “authentic, female-forward brand of country” and “groundbreaking” career.

“A tour de force in country music for more than 20 years, Miranda Lambert’s groundbreaking albums continue to capture the hearts of fans around the world. We’re so excited to celebrate her career, fierce individualism and innovation in the industry with the Country Icon Award,” said Jen Neal, Executive Vice President, Live Events and Specials, NBCUniversal Entertainment.

The event will take place two weeks after the release of Miranda Lambert’s new album, Postcards From Texas, set to be released September 13.

The project marks the first album the Texas native has recorded in her home state since she was 18. She told PEOPLE earlier this year that returning to Texas to create the album “felt really right for this new season and this new chapter.”

“I signed with Republic Records … and this new team has just given me so much fire and inspiration because it’s all about the music with them.”

The 14-track album features tracks mostly written by Miranda and her “bestie, co-writer, and co-producer” Jon Randall.

Toby Keith was the first recipient of the People’s Choice Country Awards Icon Award.

In 2023, Toby Keith attended the People’s Choice Country Awards to receive the Icon Award and perform. The event marked his first televised performance since his 2021 cancer diagnosis and his last prior to his death in February 2024.

Toby’s long-time friend Blake Shelton presented him with the award before the “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” singer took his place behind the microphone. Keith’s performance of his 2018 song “Don’t Let The Old Man In” left viewers in tears. The poignant lyrics were inspired by a conversation the singer had with legendary actor Clint Eastwood who said that his secret to longevity of life was to not letting “the old man” in.

Toby Keith penned the song and presented it to Eastwood who chose to use it in his 2018 film, The Mule. And tune into NBC and Peacock on September 26 to watch Miranda Lambert accept her Icon Award.
