Is Kevin Costner Going To Be In Yellowstone‘s Final Episodes?

Kevin Costner would gladly step into John Dutton’s boots to return to Yellowstone…under one condition.

After a long hiatus, Yellowstone is finally filming the second half of its fifth season. The show went on a midseason break in January 2023, intending to return with new episodes in the fall of 2023.

However, production was delayed, with many reports citing behind-the-scenes drama between Costner and the Yellowstone team as the reason. The show then faced further delays due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Now, Yellowstone is planning to return with new episodes this fall, over a year after originally intended.

These installments will also serve as the series’ final episodes, and the show may be ending without Costner.

Based on what Costner and other stars have said, the actor and father of seven is not slated to appear in Yellowstone‘s final episodes (at least not yet). Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton, spoke about Costner’s “unfortunate” departure from the show.

Whatever happened there is unfortunate if it’s changed anything about how the show is going to unfold,” Grimes said. “I know, [Costner] got busy with his movies that were like passion projects. At a certain point, you gotta do what you gotta do, man; you gotta do what you love.”

Does Costner Want To Return To Yellowstone?

Costner has voiced a desire to return to Yellowstone before the show ends. He also cleared the air about the reported behind-the-scenes drama, saying, “It wasn’t truthful.”

“I left my movie to be on time for them for [season] 5B,” he said. “I left exactly when they wanted, and it made it hard on me. It turns out they didn’t have the scripts for 5B. They needed four more days just to complete the first eight episodes. I left early to give them what they needed to have a complete eight, and I felt bad that the audience didn’t get 10. They didn’t have the scripts for anything else.”

The movie Costner was talking about is his new Horizon film series. The four-part saga is set to release its first installment on June 28.

But Costner is still open to reprising his role on Yellowstone if the circumstances are right. He recently told CBS Sunday Morning‘s Tracy Smith his one condition for a Yellowstone return.

“Yeah, if I like the story, where it was going, I would go back,” he said.

Only time will tell if Costner comes back to Yellowstone before it ends. In the meantime, check out the video below to watch the trailer for the first part of his Horizon movie series.
