President Trump Has Abstained From Drinking Alcohol, And He Once Shared The Tragic Reason Why
As Donald Trump settles back into life in the White House for his second term as President, he won’t unwind from the stresses of the job by drinking alcohol. It turns out, President Trump has abstained from drinking alcohol throughout his life, and he once shared the tragic reason why.
Speaking to The Washington Post in 2019, Trump opened up about the death of his brother, Fred Trump Jr. Fred was the eldest son in the family, and was poised to inherit the family business. However, he disappointed his father, Fred Trump Sr., when he chose to become a pilot.
Donald, who was nearly eight years younger than Fred, inherited the business instead. He also questioned Fred’s decision to become an airline pilot. He told The Washington Post he later regretted putting pressure on his brother for his career choice.
Fred turned to drinking, and his alcoholism eventually made it impossible for him to be a good pilot. He returned to working for the Trump family business. Sadly, Fred passed away on September 26, 1981, after suffering a heart attack. He was only 42 years old.

Donald Trump recalled telling his brother he was “wasting [his] time” with alcohol. After witnessing how alcohol affected Fred and eventually contributed to his death, Trump worried the same thing could happen to him if he started drinking.
“He was so handsome, and I saw what alcohol did to him even physically…and that had an impact on me, too,” he said.
Trump added, “Let’s say I started drinking, it’s very possible I wouldn’t be talking to you right now.“
For that reason, Trump does not drink or smoke. He claims he’s never had any alcohol, period, as he once said during a 2018 press conference:
“I’m not a drinker. I can honestly say I never had a beer in my life…Whenever they are looking for something good, I say I never had a glass of alcohol.”
Diet Coke is Trump’s beverage of choice.
Trump Was Inaugurated On January 20, 2025
Donald Trump became the 47th President of the United States on January 20, 2025. He is only the second president to serve two non-consecutive terms in office, the first being Grover Cleveland. Trump’s first term was from 2017 to 2021.
Trump’s wife, Melania, and other family members accompanied him at the swearing-in ceremony and inaugural balls.
Vice President JD Vance was also inaugurated on January 20. He attended the inaugural events with his wife, Usha, and their three children.
Due to frigid temperatures, the swearing-in ceremony was moved inside the Capitol Rotunda. Musical performers included Christopher Macchio, Lee Greenwood, and Carrie Underwood.
Underwood created a memorable moment when her recorded accompaniment failed to play. She eventually let a staff member know she could sing without it, and launched into an a cappella rendition of “America the Beautiful.”
The crowd sang with Underwood, bringing forth a sense of unity and togetherness. Watch her performance below.
