IDOL: Hannah Harper Revisits Taylor Swift’s Country Era With “Mean” Performance
on Apr 27, 2026

Hannah Harper got back to her bluegrass roots with a cover fitting for “Taylor Swift Night” on American Idol.
With only two weeks left until the American Idol Season 24 finale, the pressure was on the remaining contestants.
During Monday’s 2-hour episode, the Top 7 were tasked with singing a song from Taylor Swift’s extensive catalog, “from her early country roots to her global pop anthems, and all the Grammy-winning songs in between,” host Ryan Seacrest announced during last week’s episode.

The theme night marks the first time American Idol has had a night devoted to Taylor Swift, although her songs have been covered by other artists in past seasons.
Stand-up comedian and actress Nikki Glaser was a guest judge for the night, and longtime judge Luke Bryan performed.
Hannah Harper’s “Taylor Swift Night” Performance
Prior to Monday night’s performance, Hannah Harper spoke to Country Now about audience feedback throughout her Idol journey. She opened up last week about the criticism she’s received for her lack of movement on stage.
The accomplished bluegrass musician has often felt out of her comfort zone without an instrument in hand, covering songs that are outside her wheelhouse.
“People are not as impressed anymore with the stage presence because they expect me to move around. And knowing my roots, those who do understand, understand…it is painfully uncomfortable for me, but it’s another one of those things that, in the entertainment world after I get out of Idol, it’s not something that I’m going to be wanting to do a whole lot anyways, because I’m more of a storyteller than a performer in that way,” Hannah said. “Having to be vulnerable in that way, knowing it’s not who I am is the craziest thing ever.”
Hannah was excited about her Taylor Swift cover because it let her channel her bluegrass roots and play her banjitar – a guitar that looks and sounds like a banjo.
“I chose a song that I could still kind of pull some bluegrass in. So I’m actually playing a guitar for this week and I’m really excited about it because it’s kind of like going back to what I’ve known, but yet still it’s a Taylor theme song. So I think it’ll be fun,” she teased ahead of time.
When Hannah took the stage to perform for a chance to earn America’s votes and a place in next week’s Top 5, it was clear that she felt more at home. Her storytelling side was front and center as she performed “Mean,” the 2011 Grammy Award Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance winner.
The judges praised Hannah’s performance and noted the irony of her song choice and her message last week about the criticism she’s faced.
“Week in and week out, no matter what anybody may comment, you’re killing it, and you’re being authentically you. Great song choice,” Luke Bryan said.
Lionel praised her for staying true to herself, “This is how you do it. You’re true to yourself. You come out true to who you are. You did a fabulous job.”
“I loved everything about this performance … you made a really smart choice,” Carrie agreed.
