Who Was Bass Reeves?

Bass Reeves was a real-life U.S. Marshall based in Fort Smith, Arkansas, who captured over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals during his career without ever being wounded. He was the first Black lawman in the region and as a result, faced regular threats of abuse and racism. Reeves is considered to be one of the greatest frontier heroes west of the Mississippi River in American history.

Lead actor and executive producer David Oyelowo told Vanity Fair

“I had no idea who [Bass Reeves] was. Within a very cursory Google search, I couldn’t believe I didn’t know who he was—and that a myriad of TV shows and films hadn’t been made about him already, considering the legendary nature of what he had done. That was the beginning of the obsession with trying to get it made.”

Lawmen Will Not Shy Away From Heavy Topics

The eight-episode series will follow Reeves’ life journey from an enslaved man to an involuntary soldier, to a refugee, to a farmer, and finally to a lawman.

A note from executive producer Chad Feehan describes how this series will carry heavy themes of slavery and Reconstruction as the story plays out. The trailer reveals a glimpse of the show’s action and violence including a jarring scene where Jennie Reeves is accosted by members of the Ku Klux Klan and faces them at gunpoint.

Throughout the course of the series, Reeves will experience much internal and external conflict while he wrestles with the moral and spiritual cost his career has to his beloved family.

The show arrives at a great time for fans who are growing anxious for the SAG-AFTRA actors strike to come to end thus allowing Yellowstone production to resume.
