American Idol Celebrates “Songs Of Faith” For Easter

On Sunday, April 20th, American Idol put gospel music center stage, as the judges, contestants, and musical guests came together for a special Easter production.

The Top 20 competitors performed “songs of faith,” which, for many, was a step away from their typical genres. Highlights from the evening included John Foster’s emotional original song written in memory of his late best friend, Canaan James Hill’s powerful delivery of “Better Days,” and a passionate performance of “Up To The Mountain” by Breanna Nix.

Judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, as well as “artist in residence” Jelly Roll also took the Idol stage for performances of their own.

Carrie Underwood’s faith has long influenced her music, as seen in her emotional songs like “Jesus Take The Wheel” and “Something In The Water.”

Additionally, she released a complete gospel album, My Savior, in 2021. It topped both the country and gospel charts and won the Grammy Award for Best Roots Gospel Album the following year.

For a few special occasions, the 42-year-old has performed “How Great Thou Art” live, each time more awe-inspiring than the last. The beloved hymn showcases Carrie’s faith and beautifully highlights her God-given vocal talent.

Carrie Underwood’s rendition of “How Great Thou Art” was the perfect way to close American Idol‘s Easter special, which proved to be a powerful and emotional night. Her stunning performance left the audience in awe and moved many to tears. Watch it below!

Luke Bryan & Brandon Lake’s Spontaneous Duet

Carrie Underwood’s performance on the American Idol Easter special left Luke Bryan and special guest Brandon Lake feeling inspired and the pair broke out into song backstage shortly after the episode wrapped.

As the coaches walked backstage following the show, Brandon and Luke broke out their operatic voices and dramatically sang the lyrics, “How great though art…” while the other cast and staff members watched grinning.

Brandon shared a video of the spirited moment and wrote:

“That feeling when you wrap @americanidol Easter special. He is risen y’all!!!”
