Johnny Van Zant’s Daughter Recently Underwent Emergency Surgery
Lynyrd Skynyrd has canceled more appearances so their lead vocalist, Johnny Van Zant, can be with his daughter.
On Tuesday (September 24), the legendary Southern rock group announced they were canceling their show scheduled for that night in Anchorage, Alaska. The band cited a “medical emergency” as the reason.
Going into more detail, Skynyrd said their frontman, Johnny Van Zant, learned his daughter was undergoing emergency surgery.

Johnny has served as the band’s lead vocalist since 1987. He follows in the footsteps of Skynyrd’s original lead singer and his older brother, Ronnie Van Zant, who was killed in a plane crash in 1977.
Sadly, Johnny has experienced a lot of loss in his life. His daughter, Lindsay, passed away in January 2018 following a brave battle against a rare form of cancer. She left behind many loved ones, including her three sisters (Johnny’s other daughters), Kristen, Harmony, and Taylor.
Skynyrd’s statement about their canceled Anchorage show did not share which one of Johnny’s daughters recently needed emergency surgery, or why.
Lynyrd Skynyrd Cancels Four Additional Appearances After Anchorage Cancellation
In their original statement, Skynyrd said more details about the fate of their upcoming appearances would be announced in the coming days. They’ve since made such an announcement.
On Wednesday (September 25), Skynyrd announced the need to cancel four additional appearances. The affected show locations and dates are:
- September 26 – West Valley, Utah
- September 27 – Loveland, Colorado
- September 28 – Colorado Springs, Colorado
- September 29 – Albuquerque, New Mexico
Skynyrd also provided a short update on Johnny’s daughter. They said he has left their tour to be by her side as she fights “a sudden emergency illness.”
“He has left the tour to be with her while they continue testing, diagnosis, and treatment,” the band’s statement read.
Update From Johnny Van Zant
Later on Thursday (September 26), Johnny shared a video on his personal Facebook page with an update. He revealed that his daughter, Taylor, was experiencing numbness on her right side, so she went to the emergency room. Doctors discovered a mass on her brain, which is why she needed surgery.
Johnny said thankfully, the doctors don’t believe the mass is cancerous. However, Taylor could still use all the prayers she could get, and Johnny expressed his gratitude to those who have prayed for her already.
